To achieve big goals you have to dream big.

To achieve big goals you have to believe.

To achieve big goals you can’t change your direction.

Today's Lesson Learned

When you start to make progress, do you change the destination?

If you're ambitious like me (and if you’re reading this you likely are), setting big goals is not the issue.

We’re pretty good at making a plan and then starting to do the work to achieve our desired outcome.

So, why is it that we so often fall short of accomplishing our goals?

We change our destination before we reach it.

Think of planning a road trip. You have a clear destination in mind, say a beautiful mountain town. You map out your route, know how many miles you need to travel, and set off with excitement and determination. Along the way, you can measure your progress, enjoy the journey, and stay motivated knowing exactly where you’re headed.

When we set a goal in life, it’s often like setting off on a journey without a fixed destination. The most difficult part is the mental challenge; we never know if we are just around the corner or still miles away from achieving our dreams. We have to find a way to balance motivation, discipline, and effort without knowing exactly how long it will take.

Even so, many of us are able to start this journey.

We begin to make progress toward achieving our goals. But as we travel, our perspective changes, and as our perspective changes, so do our expectations and goals. Before we ever reach our original destination, we begin to set our sights on a new, more distant location.

We change our destination before we ever arrive.

So, why does this matter—Isn’t it a good thing to have big goals and big aspirations?

The answer is yes, but.

To achieve anything meaningful, it takes conscious, consistent, compounding commitment. You must be willing to keep driving even when the endpoint isn’t clear.

When we change the destination, we do ourselves a disservice; we extend our journey indefinitely.

There is a difference between delayed gratification and delayed happiness. One leads to fulfillment and the other to regret.

In order to have a high level of output for the sustained period of time you need to achieve your goals, you have to allow yourself to be happy.
